Different time--and it wasn't overplayed as a joke--just a light joke.
It's "Jeep" or Lee Handley I'm talking about. Think it was "Jeep".

Linked to your site while researching my favorite player, Whitey Wietlemann. Growing up in San Diego in the 50's & 60's, I was able to attend a few PCL Padre games and Major league exhibition games at beautiful, Westgate Park. Whitey, was a kid magnet, ever friendly, always had time to talk to kids even while transporting tons of gear from the clubhouse to the dugout. The original #19, (before Tony Gwynn) he truly was Mr. San Diego. I really enjoyed the the photo of the Pirates at the Bus station with Honus Wagner. You could airbrush some Thompson Sub-Machine guns to the picture and they would look imposingly like a gang from the era. Incredible photograph!

Just saw your post on Net54--I'm new there. I have a 1935 photo of Lee Handley, Gordon Slade and my uncle Emmett Nelson in Cincinnati Reds uniforms. I wrote a short essay on how I came to discover who the two players were--photo found with no identification--and would be happy to share. Have just printed a hardcopy book of my own search for the baseball history in my family but think, on first glance, that your online site is terrific. Would be glad to send scan and story if you like.

I loved your handley project. I'm not exactly sure the purpose but I can appreciate it for what it is. I knew gene personally. The last few years of his life he was still sharp and full of wit. He knew how to make people smile and was always a charmer. I miss him greatly. His baseball career was only a flicker of what made his life amazing... He will continue to be a huge impact in my life and I cherish every memory I had with him.

I found your post online about your brother Kenny today. Small world...I was just talking to my dad today about some family lineage. I hope this makes it to you. My father's grandmother, whom I believe is your mother's mother, is Nora Ari (Ary) we don't know the spelling. My dad was telling me how his grandma Ari was divorced from her first huband, Patrick Manning. Nora was later remarried to a man named George Gregorio, who for some reason changed his last name to Karo. Nora became Nora Karo. My dad believes Nora had two sisters, but cannot remember their names. One of them married a "Hubbs". Her son was Kenny Hubbs. My dad remembers this because of Kenny's Rookie of the Year award. My dad's family did not stay in touch with Nora's siblings so did not have many details to share.
Please let me know if you are related to Nora Ari (Gregorio) Karo. She would be your aunt I believe. As I recreate my dad's family tree, I would be very happy to know we have more cousins. Nora would be my great grandmother and your mom could possibly be my great aunt?? I think?
I look forward to hearing back.

Hello Kirk,
I am a big fan of your brother. I discovered him in a sports illustrated magazine about baseball players from the past. I was 14 then and am 35 now. I am a Hubbs. I collect all his cards and he was an amazing player.

Thanks for the heads-up, and yes, I did see a week or so ago that there were a couple of that card listed on Ebay. But with the asking prices being more than $100 higher from what I paid only a couple years ago, and more than $100-150 higher than other commons in the set, I have to pass on those offerings. I suspect that folks are trying to grab a premium from family members that just isn't warranted, as I know of no other reason that Gene's cards would command a higher price than others in the set.
